NATO ally Denmark has begun deploying advance troops and military equipment to the region after President Donald Trump made clear his intention to take control of the Arctic island of Greenland. Trump argued on Truth Social that Greenland is vital for U.S. national security and the "Golden Dome" missile defense system they are building. He stated, "If we dont get it, Russia or China will, and that is not going to happen!" asserting that the matter is non-negotiable.
As the crisis deepens, the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland have been invited to Washington for talks at the White House on Wednesday with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Greenlands Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen emphasized, "We choose Denmark," and stated they would not be under U.S. rule; meanwhile, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that U.S. moves in this direction could spell the end of the NATO alliance.
French President Emmanuel Macron and other European leaders expressed full solidarity with Denmark, stating that Greenlands sovereignty belongs solely to Denmark and the people of Greenland. On the U.S. side, polls show that only 17 percent of the American public supports the acquisition of Greenland, with support for taking the island by military force at just 4 percent. The White House, however, maintains its stance that "all options are on the table," including military intervention.
