Not because the GOP is, but because it is important to build a clear brand and to show that this really is a NATIONAL party. Tip O'Neill famously said, "All Politics is local." That was never really true, and I doubt that Tip really meant it literally. After all, Watergate and Vietnam were huge national issues that heavily affected every race. Sure, there can be local issues that heavily influence Senate and House races. And the charisma and "machine" built by a long-serving candidate can go a long way, if you want to call that "local".

But now, especially in a world where national and global news travels in milliseconds, and what happens in Minnesota or Ukraine can affect us all next week or next month, it is vital that we leave that archaic proposition behind. We MUST have a national brand because people are increasingly facing NATIONAL PROBLEMS. The runaway cost of HC is a national problem. The billionaire oligarchs driving a vast transfer of wealth away from the middle class is a national (and global) problem. ICE is a national problem. The failure of our judicial system is a national problem. The failure of Congress to provide a Constitutional check on a rogue President is a national problem.

We should have convention leading to the mid-terms. The problem is that there is no national Democratic leader, by office or de facto. The closest thing we have to a national leader is Newsom, but many would reject that. So, lacking a single recognized leader, how could we hold a powerful convention that would inspire the public to trust that electing Democrats across the board would truly help counter the evils that are going on with this administration?

That's a big problem, but if we don't solve that somehow, in November we may look pretty aimless and ineffective to the voting public.
