attribute the GOP's continual use of racist memes and tropes as nothing more than "political hyperbole". But apparently some in his state must have called him up and read him the riot act and/or he blinked and finally "saw it".

In a career spanning 40 years, I have never encountered this type of rhetoric. The Right never used to talk like this. So who on our side has legitimized this type of vile degradation? It’s a question worth thinking about.
