An illiberal democracy is a governing system where leaders are democratically elected but, once in power, act to restrict civil liberties, weaken checks and balances, control the media, and undermine the rule of law. These regimes use the machinery of democracy to erode liberal democratic values, often by favoring a specific national or majority identity. Common examples include Hungary under Viktor Orbán and Slovakia, with characteristics including executive aggrandizement and marginalized opposition.
