22. This is where EDUCATION about firearms is important

I know we'll never overturn the 2nd amendment. But people need to be educated about what gun ownership REALLY means.

thmore cIt doesn't make you safer, AT ALL. Sure, there are occasional cases where someone is able to shoot an armed intruder.

But there are more like this one.

There are more cases where a child gets their hands on a weapon and shoots another family member.

There are more cases where an unhappy, often bullied, teenager takes the firearm to school and kills classmates and teachers.

I saw a classmate at a high school reunion. I knew he owned a bar.

It was right after Texas passed it's first concealed carry law, which Ann Richards vetoed, even though she knew her veto would be overturned. She knew it would cost her her reelection in 1994, but she did it because it was the right thing to do.

So I asked my bar owning friend what he thought about the new law, which I was very much against. ahohave prHe said it meant "More dead people".

I said "Okay, I agree . Please explain."

He said, "I own a bar, which means we deal with a lot of cash. I was in the military. I know how to use firearms and I have them to protect my business."

"But unless someone has been in the military or law enforcement, they probably never shot another human being. They may not have even shot an animal. So if someone gets mugged, or gets their home or business broken into, and they pull a weapon on an armed assailant, the assailant will probably shoot first, BECAUSE THEY ARE EXPERIENCED."

"So more guns just means more dead people, and they aren't going to all be bad guys."

We didn't even talk about our 3 classmates that killed themselves with guns. I know people can unalive themselves in other ways, but nothing is as fast and sure as a gun. When it comes to suicide, simply owning a firearm can make the difference between a bad day (month, year) and a tragedy.

Just ask the Judd family. With Naomi's history of mental illness, she NEVER should have access to a gun. EVER! She died in Ashley's arms.
