Graham says Iran blockade could expand globally after talks with Trump [View all]

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) made a stunning claim Wednesday after speaking with President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth earlier that morning by phone, one that could have major global implications if proven accurate. Graham’s announcement comes amid the U.S. naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping waterway through which 20% of the world’s oil trade flows.

Trump ordered the blockade last week in response to Iran’s own partial blockade of the waterway to U.S.-aligned vessels. Iranian officials have claimed that the U.S. blockade is a violation of Washington and Tehran’s two-week ceasefire agreement, originally set to expire on Wednesday before Trump extended it. Nevertheless, Trump has vowed to maintain the blockade until an agreement is reached.

“I think the President’s decision to leave the blockade in place is very smart,” Graham wrote Wednesday in a social media post on X to his more than 2.4 million followers. “It is having a strong effect on the ability of Iran to continue to be the largest state sponsor of terrorism – which they appear intent on doing. I not only expect this blockade to stay in place until Iran shows a commitment to change their ways, I expect the blockade will be growing and that it could become global soon.”

Furthermore, Graham issued a vague threat to other nations that may consider helping Iran continue its oil trade. “To those assisting or thinking about assisting the Iranian regime in distributing its oil, which provides resources for terrorism, you do so at your own peril,” he wrote.
