Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said Wednesday that he will stay on the Feds board as a governor after his term as chair expires on May 15.
After my term as chair ends on May 15, I will continue to serve as a governor for a period of time to be determined, Powell said at his press conference after the Feds policy meeting.
The question of whether Powell would completely leave the U.S. central bank has been looming large for Fed watchers. He can stay on the board of governors until early 2028, even after his term as chair ends.
Powell promised last month to remain on the Feds board of governors until the Trump administrations Justice Department had concluded its probe into cost overruns for renovations to the central banks headquarters. Then last week, the DOJ said it was closing the investigation, though it left open the possibility of restarting it.
