My thinking about Bari Weiss and her early record at CBS News can be summed up in this tweet:

Things have quickly soured at CBS News since that tweet. I’m not going to review the whole story of how CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss demanded “60 Minutes” hold a segment about the torture of Venezuelan deportees occurring at CECOT in El Salvador. You can read about it here.

Weiss critiqued the segment for its lack of balance and context. She suggested high-level administration officials be contacted to presumably balance what she considered an unfair narrative. She refused to accept that the administration had already been contacted and declined to provide a response.

Weiss apparently did not dispute any of the segment’s specific factual assertions, or note unambiguous ways the segment failed to meet the stated standards of CBS News. She couldn’t really claim these points, because the piece was carefully vetted by CBS lawyers and by standards and practices personnel. The way this internal crisis exploded in public view reveals that Weiss also failed to anticipate the likely Streisand Effect her actions would cause.
