My high school brought this guy in to peddle his anti-drug get clean schtick. It was pure schtick. One story began, I will never forget. This guy took a hit on a joint that was laced with PCP and was paralyzed on one side of his body. Then he took another hit on the joint and was paralyzed. He was so terrified, he called me immediately because he was one of my informants. He told me he was alone and what happened and didn't know what to do.
Really....the seventies when he was still a cop. A guy paralyzed on both sides of his body managed to dial a rotary phone.
The part that made me truly angry was not the lying. It was the false sense of help. He did his song and dance for a three hour all school assembly. He ended by saying they would have support staff to help people who wanted to get clean.
That was half true. They had people after school that day and half as many the next day. Then they disappeared.just enough to get kids who were realizing they were running towards feeling something good or running away from feeling bad the kernel of a thought that might happen the face slap that the school, the parent group that brought this asshat in, etc didn't really want to help them.
My sister and some of her friends were convinced after the support stopped after 36 hours, the school was just trying to gather a list of stonerd to expel.
To make it worse, the contract required that he brought back the next year for another long program in the gym. It was a ton of money at the time.
Closest that I ever got to getting in real trouble was putting up David Toma look like a like contests all over the place in our burb.
I put him up there with the Joel Osteen of the world getting rich on others misery (kids on drugs) and fears (rich mostly white parents).
