Mine was a shock too. I found this dog on a beach when I was painting a friend's parents' beach house one winter. She looked like a black lab but I never found an owner, the place was deserted anyway. I took her back to college with me and got a job with a vet to support her, and she had puppies about a month later. I did know she was pregnant before she whelped and built her a whelping box but she opted to have the puppies in my bed in the middle of the night.

She was a wonderful dog and I was totally in love with her and with the puppy I kept. Since then I've been smitten with labs but all my dogs have been rescue mongrels (and were all amazing, obviously). I bought my first purebred 2 years ago ( not many rescue dogs in the Netherlands) and of course I got a black lab. She could not be more unlike my first rescue if she tried.
