The lyrics are believable. The "theme" of the song (no, not the music) is clever: the singer is trying to use the telephone to connect with a past that is so far gone he's not even sure it really happened. In the end, he realizes he can't connect with it, and tells the operator to keep the dime.

Kind of profound, when you think about it.
