Mozart's diary shows the composer bought a starling from a Vienna pet store on May 27, 1784, and that the bird was singing 17 notes from a another piece of music he was composing, known as Concerto in G Major, K. 453, getting just one note wrong, West said. Mozart wrote in his diary: 'That was wonderful!'

Although some have suggested the notation may indicate Mozart had used a song he heard the bird sing for his composition, West said it was more likely Mozart had been humming or whistling the composition when he had visited the bird earlier and the bird picked it up. 'He was an inveterate whistler and hummer,' West said.

When the bird died three years later in 1787, Mozart organized an elaborate funeral service for the animal and even wrote a poem in his honor, West said. The first four lines of the poem were:

'A little fool lies here

'Whom I held dear

'A starling in the prime

'Of his brief time
