Kentucky Derby [View all]
From 1977 to 1988 I watched the Triple Crown Races. The very first one I watched I chose Seattle Slew as my favorite. He went on to win the Triple Crown. The next year I picked Alydar and he came in 2nd in in every one of the three. In those 11 years at least one of the 4 horses I chose as contenders would always come in the top 3. I never chose by odds, just chose the ones who looked spirited and eager to run.
My Mom eventually told my Uncle who used to own harness racing horses, about it. He patted me on the back and said, "damn girl I should take you to the track one day. I never did get to go witn him." I did go with two friends of mine to a local track once. I did win ten bucks because one I picked came in 2nd in one of the races. It was the only time I actually went to the track or bet.
Other than that I had been on a loosing streak since 88 on my Derby picks so I quit watching. I did watch tonight just to see how I would do. Of my four picks only one came in fourth. He was leading until almost the very end. Guess my ability to pick winners went away with my other superpower which was to remember a surprising number of Supreme Court cases and the precedent they set. Oh well.
At least a woman trainer was the first to have her horse win the Derby tonight, and one of Slew's descendants came in 2nd so that was worth watching.
