(25,216 posts)Were planning to leave NYC just after the Fourth of July Sail 250 Celebration to sail to Maine and back. Its a voyage weve made before but this time we want to explore further down east into Maine. Acadia National Park beckons.
Although we have to pay our expenses, cruising on a small yacht in our case a 27-foot cutter is much less expensive than traveling on shore primarily because we have our home with us so there are few hotel bills. Its like traveling in a recreational vehicle. Since we sail, our fuel costs are diminutive and our solar panel along with the Diesel engines alternator keep our batteries fully charged.
In a typical week, we will anchor at night 3-5 nights which is free. The other nights we stay at a marina which varies in cost but typically is equivalent to a room at a discount motel chain. Those stops are helpful to reprovision our food, replenish our water, buy fuel and pump out our sewage tank.
We feel excited, fortunate and grateful to have these opportunities to see our world as explorers.
