I've never seen the earlier movie with Burt Lancaster for comparison, but doubt that version could be any better.
I've been to Italy twice, but never south of Rome. Like so many European countries, there's so much to see and it takes many trips unless you can stay for a long visit, despite it being more compact than the U.S.
I hope that you get to go to Sicily someday.
