He's adorable and obviously well-loved by the recipient. That's all that matters.
Unless it is a kit, not many people use the same yarn and/or colors as the original pattern (and even with a kit, people have been known to make substitutions). There are no crochet police! You could have made him orange, purple, and green if you wanted to do so, and it's none of anyone's business but your own.
