2. Reminds me of when the price went over 99.9 cents a gallon.

The mechanical pump readings only had spaces for numbers to the right of the decimal for the price per gallon, so the dealers would just paint a "1" (or use a decal) to the left of the price display window. Before the price reached above 1.999, they had begun to use digital displays which could handle the outrageously higher prices like we have today.
