8. Steller was a very accomplished scientist/explorer. A shame he isn't better known.

Dead at 37, having accomplished more than many accomplish in a lifetime. His Wikipedia entry is amazing reading.

I grew up East of the Mississippi. I saw the Steller's Jay only in my little Goldern Nature Guide, next to the familiar Eastern Bluejay. When my family took a vacation through most of the Western states years ago, the first Steller's Jay I sighted was how I knew we were really 'out West'. (I think the colors in that photo may have been enhanced a little, BTW.)
