Boca Raton Mayor's race heads to recount, with top 2 candidates just 6 votes apart [View all]

A race for Boca Raton Mayor is likely heading to a recount after the top two candidates finished just 6 votes — and just 0.03 percentage points — apart.

With all precincts reporting and ballots still being counted, City Council member Andy Thomson led the three-way mayoral race with 39.64% of the vote, accounting for 7,562 ballots cast in his favor. Political newcomer Mike Liebelson trailed him with 7,556 votes (39.61%).

A machine recount is required any time the margin of victory is less than or equal to 0.5% of the total votes. If the machine recount still shows a margin of 0.25 percentage points or less, a manual recount is required.

Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Wendy Sartory Link confirmed the recount would begin after 5 p.m. Thursday.
