...because neither side wants to talk about solutions. American conservatives want the mentally ill left in the street to die; many American liberals act as if mental illness is nothing more than an alternate lifestyle. Righties fear the cost, lefties fear coercion and abuse, and because a regulated and constantly-monitored system of treatment sounds like a lot of money and work, they'd just rather kick the can down the road and look the other way.

In the end it just means greater costs and more abuse.
