GA Republicans call energy saving 'communist.' What Georgia Power says

(USA Today) If you've been outside in North Georgia over the past couple weeks, you know it's been hot — really hot.

A heat dome settled over the region last week, reaching up the eastern seaboard all the way to New York City, prompting the city's mayor, Zohran Mamdani, to ask residents to keep their home temperature set at 78 degrees to ease the burden on the electrical grid.

"New York: it's hot out there, and the power grid is working overtime to keep us cool. Set your AC to 78 degrees, turn off lights/electronics you're not using, and unplug what you can," Mamdani said in a post on X. "A stable grid means the AC stays on, and lives are saved. Let's ease demand — and get through the heat — together."

The message was met with significant pushback from city residents, as well as politicians across the country, including here in Georgia. Congressman Clay Fuller called the idea "communist," while Republican gubernatorial candidate Rick Jackson said he wouldn't "force" that kind of action in Georgia.
