Group abandons Michigan minimum wage ballot campaign

Lansing — A group seeking to reverse changes the state Legislature made last year to Michigan's tipped and minimum wage laws is abandoning its efforts for now.

One Fair Wage had sought to collect enough signatures to place a referendum vote on the November ballot, but was unable to meet their signature goals. Instead, the group said, it planned to throw its efforts behind a separate ballot initiative seeking to limit certain political contributions.

One Fair Wage was attempting to undo a law signed by Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in February 2025 that scaled back increases in the minimum wage for workers who receive tips. It needed 223,099 valid signatures to put the question on the ballot in November.

The group said it will continue to call on the Legislature to reverse the minimum wage changes they made in February 2025; and, if they don't act, "the will of the voters and working Michiganders will prevail at the ballot box."
