When one starts with filling the property tax refund, the first line is total income and the second is to to add the non taxable part of the Social Security benefits.

Down the form there is a list of 20 something items that are not taxable on the regular returns but that have to be added to this form. And QCD is included.

I admit, I never read those long lists that can be used to lower tax load; they never affect us but this QCD does.

The Commissioner was quite nice. I just emailed him wondering whether the agents are aware of QCD, added that I was going to follow the appeal guidelines. Based on our last name and address an agent identified us and called our home this morning.

So we have to pay back the refund, plus interest and am now working on the subsequent year amendment.

I am glad that we used QCD on only two returns..

Sigh..
