Trump administration sends troops, armored vehicles to border in Big Bend [View all]
The U.S. Military has deployed troops and armored vehicles to the border in West Texas, including inside Big Bend National Park, as part of President Donald Trump's drive to beef up border security.
M1126 combat vehicles are traveling today through El Paso and Big Bend to areas along the border, according to a report from KTSM.
Known as "Strykers," the eight-ton, 19-wheel vehicles are well-suited for traversing the area's rugged terrain, officials have said.
The Strykers en route to the border are part of the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colo., according to KTSM.
Deployment of troops to the Big Bend region began March 13 and is expected to reach about 500 in the coming weeks, officials announced last week in a news conference covered by Marfa Public Radio. About 200 of the soldiers came from Fort Carson.
