This 23-year-old UH student (D) is headed to a runoff election for Harris County district clerk [View all]

Alex Maldonado is a man who appreciates the process. In music, mathematics or court records, the 23-year-old has an affinity for the behind-the-scenes steps that make the world flow smoothly.

It's a skill that's well-suited for the Harris County District Clerk's office, which is primarily tasked with processing court filings, maintaining case records and managing jury selection. Of the eight Democratic candidates who sought the office in this month's primary, Maldonado is one of two to advanced to the May runoff election.

His opponent, Darrell Jordan, is a former judge more than twice Maldonado's age with nearly a decade of political experience.

But Maldonado - a musician, math teacher and graduate student at the University of Houston - said he has the administrative chops to modernize the often sidelined office.
