3. Sharing a relatively open border with a country that has few national gun safety laws...

is one of the reasons our gun deaths are higher than they should be given the laws we have. Smuggling is big and US hand guns find their way here all too often. This additional safety restriction will help but won't completely address the issue and that won't happen unless the US adopts sensible gun safety laws as well, imo.
