the thing to keep in mind about PDFs is that they are really an extension of a printing format (postscript). so 99.9% of the time you don't have to 'export' to PDF, you simply 'print to PDF'. only place i can think of where you would 'export' to PDF is in a page layout program like adobe indesign and even then you can also print to pdf instead if you want.

* if you're on mac os x you can simply 'print to pdf...' from any 'file' menu, including in MS word. no export necessary. no setup necessary. it's built in.

* if you're on windows you will need to have the virtual printer driver software installed. if you install adobe reader 11 (just say 'NO!!!' to MacAfee) the required software will be installed. chances are it's *already* installed and you just didn't know it. so 1st thing check this: try 'print to file... > PDF' in the 'print...' dialog box instead of to a printer.

* if you're on linux, it's built in. just go to 'print to file.. > PDF'.
