What's the point of buying an unlocked iPhone 5c or 5S? [View all]

It looks like every carrier wants you to use the iPhone they sell you, or that is pre-configured for their network.

Thus -- it seems -- if you go online and buy an iPhone 5S or 5c, and want to use a no-contract carrier, you are out of luck. Or am I missing something.

If one had an unlocked iPhone 5c purchased from Apple, where could or would you go to get a no-contract service arrangement?
