11. Giants statement, Monday June 15th

Adding a bookend to this thread. It will be interesting (to me) to look back on this in two years. The story of Rainbow Capitalism/MAGA has been a revealing topic to follow.

Giants’ Pride statement sides with anti-gay players, screws over LGBTQ fans

San Francisco Giants stated support for their anti-gay players, deflecting blame and giving the middle to their LGBTQ fans.

Three Giants pitchers chose to wear the Pride cap — voluntarily participating in the “team activation” — and chose to deface the Pride logo with a Bible verse that tells the LGBTQ community they can’t have the rainbow as their symbol of unity. The rainbow, long the centerpiece of LGBTQ symbols, they say belongs to a belief system that has been used to end the lives of gay people and demean gay people for centuries. And yes, the Giants let them…

The current owner with the largest stake in the franchise and whose son is chairman of the board — Charles B. Johnson — has donated many millions of dollars to Republicans in recent years, including anti-gay politicians like Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT), Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Paul LePage (R-ME) and many others.

While the Giants are, just like their anti-gay players, trying to confuse the public with some word salad, Outsports will keep telling it like it is. The players did intend to attack the LGBTQ community with their awful display of homophobia on Pride Night. They did intend to strip the community of its one symbol of unity — the rainbow. And the Giants are intentional in giving another big middle finger to the city’s own LGBTQ community with this statement of deflection.
