2. Over the decades, I have noticed things that older males do that thin the herd of younger males

Wars, of course top the list. Line from an old Chad Mitchel Trio song, The Sinking of the Rubin James, always plays in my head when I ponder this topic:

"Many years have passed
but still I wonder why
The worst of men must fight
and the best of men must die"

I also have suspicions about religions who require young men to go far away and evangelize and the ones who convince young men that they will have a lovely time in heaven if they strap on explosives and blow themselves, and others up.

Tamp down the head count of young males in a community/society and the older males get the girls. Yes, I am THAT suspicious about their motives.
