For a very long time here in the US. In junior high school, for instance, girls have home economics classes where they learn to be a 'homemaker' and boys have shop classes where they learn to be manly men and make stuff with tools. If the boys were taught the same classes in home economics and the girls were taking shop classes too, things would be different.
