A few years ago, when I was probably in my mid-40s, I was at my own doctor's office for a routine physical, and he gave me some very similar and unsolicited advice.

He said that through all his years of being a physician, one major factor above all others determined the future trajectory of a person's health. That factor was how much they kept moving. Being sedentary, he said, causes problems and exacerbates all others.
