So I started sleeping on the floor. Felt better immediately, but it took a little getting used to, and a good year before all pain was gone. Now I haven't had a spasm in 2 years and I've switched from an air mattress to a futon style, but still on the floor. I think when I have the space, I'll build a platform for the futon mattress. Someday I'll have more trouble getting off the floor anyway.
I can sleep on a regular mattress for a few days, any longer and it starts up again 
I assume it puts my spine out of alignment or something
