I do admit that if a stranger asked me for directions to my house, I would find a Minnesota-nice way to avoid that.

This is also not the first time you have insulted the people who take the time to offer sympathy or helpful suggestions. Relax, I won't.

Minnesota is not a state that offers no help to the poor, and it is DEFINITELY not a state where people avoid engaging with other people on a friendly basis. As a shy person, I sometimes found the degree of friendliness a little much.

Of course, I have observed Minnesotans back slowly away from interactions that get, um, fraught for no good reason. Even the nicest places have a non-zero percentage of bullies and manipulators, and no sensible person wants to get tangled up with them.
