I've taken to lurking in alleyways

We have a situation in our neighborhood. I’ve been trying to get a feral cat situation under control—think decaying historic mansion with overgrown yard and old people feeding cats. I’m off to a late start this year because of a broken ankle. Also, I’ve just discovered that the guy living in the alley behind the decaying mansion is also feeding cats. I’ve spotted kittens in the alley and am now camped out back there for hours at a time hoping to get them coming out so I can get them with a drop trap. The cat I think is their mother has gotten comfortable going under the trap to eat, but the kittens dive for cover and aren’t coming out for goodies no matter how long I sit there. It’s been frustrating.
