I used to grab my three cats and head there, myself, when the sirens would go off! As I draped the blanket over the four or us, the cats were most chagrined! (LOL)

Today, I have an inner room I call "the panic room." It's completely away from all windows, in the middle of the house, and is all concrete blocks. The only thing that might happen is a wood roof could fall in. But I have all my cats carriers in there, and when the sirens are close enough to hear, we try to (calmly) find all the cats (there are 9 now), and put them in their carriers, and then put the dog on the leash to go in last with us. The cats are not happy, but as long as Mama is there with them, they'll put up with things.

This is much better than trying to round them up 2 and 3 at a time and put them in the basement, like we did in our old house. That was more a process of "put two in the basement, and as you put another 2 or three down there, chase the first two back up the basement stairs!" Oh, what we do for our fur babies!
