My father and his parents were born there but in 1943, he was in the Marines on his way to the Pacific. Just north of Beaumont is Jasper, Texas, another town with a history of racial violence. A black man was chained and tied to the back of a truck and dragged to his death by 3 white men. James Byrd, Jr died June 7, 1998. I used to have relatives in that area but most are not with us now and others moved for better opportunities as there aren’t many for anyone. Always felt like a sundown part of the state and I would imagine not much has changed over the years.
