2. I picked up a conversion kit a while ago...

From http://www.ebikes.ca/ I got the direct drive model, but I would recommend going for a geared hub motor. You lose out on the regeneration, but the geared motors are a lot smaller and lighter, and there's no drag when coasting. With the conversion kit, it was pretty straightforward to retrofit an existing bike.
