4. The problem with scertaining the true purpose of any ancient monument

is that most were used by different people in different ways at different times in its history. It muddies the waters considerably.

Water cults were well known in prehistory but most were centered around springs, which begs the question of whether or not there was an ancient spring anywhere around Stonehenge. I suppose the river could have sufficed, but it seems unusual.
