Anora, new movie by Sean Baker [View all]

This was the best film from beginning to end that I’ve seen this year. Mikey Madison, who plays the title role, was extraordinary in her part as a NYC sex worker who gets involved with a Russian oligarch’s son. That’s all I’ll say as to not give out spoilers. There’s plenty of sex, but it’s integral to the narrative, and it’s one of the best cast films in many a moon. It’s funny, raw, surprising and ultimately compassionate. I’ve enjoyed all of Sean Baker’s films, but I think this is his best effort yet. It deserved winning the Cannes Film Festival grand prize.
