also go through the 'used software' if they have it in the store

and remember a lot of really __GOOD__ software today is free because it leaks over from linux to windows or mac

so office
libreoffice free and mostly compatible
(or kdeoffice)
or gnumeric (for a perl enhanced spreadsheet)

inkscape (vector graphics)

gimp (photo editing)

sigill or calibre (ebook handling)

Scribus (free DeskTop Publishing)

there are so many good free programs out there one doesn't really "need" in most cases to buy software unless one wants windows and then only the OS (ok so autocad and examples like that are not free)
