My wife’s father was an American serviceman stationed in Scotland at the time he met my mother in law and my wife grew up in Scotland until 12 or so then they moved back to the states, he had separated long before that.

I think for both of us, her in ‘79, me in ‘82 it was a way to get out of where we were and see more of the world. I did have relatives in different services, but that didn’t influence me at all. I joined because I wanted a gig where I got paid every two weeks and would get to see places I wouldn’t otherwise be able to, and it didn’t seem too difficult.

My service was different from hers, we didn’t meet until our careers were about half over, mine was almost Forest Gumpish in the places and times I was around and things happening at the same place and time… it was weird looking back at it…
