... but he learned a LOT from his mentor, Roy Cohn. Cohn taught him to get dirt on everyone he did business with. That's serious leverage, and I suspect that there are very few politicians that got where they are today without having something ugly to hide.
Another side to it is probably that they want to rule over the ashes of whatever's left when Satan calls him home.
