Israel is conducting yet another wave of military strikes across Iran and Lebanon, while the U.S. says its heaviest attacks are still to come. Five days into the conflict, the Trump administration is trying to project a clear and unified message after failing to answer basic questions about its mission. The conflict is being called a war of choice, since experts say that there was no imminent Iranian threat.

The U.S. attacks were launched without approval from Congress and with polls showing most Americans opposed to the conflict. Meanwhile, Tehran is widening the scope of its retaliation. Every hour, U.S. allies in the region are at greater risk of being drawn in. Inside Iran, a U.S.-based human rights group reports a death count of more than 1,000.

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy serves on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He was among a group of senators briefed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday evening. Sen.
