Says who?

Current activity puts a lie to that thought.

Fits in with the image of Iran as a poor, backwards country with a second rate religion and autocratic rulers though.

Perhaps that image is wrong?

Iran is simply showing neighboring countries that having US bases on their soil is a liability, not an asset.

Some of the bases may be abandoned, permanently.
