Should Canadians Consider Trump's Push for Statehood? - a WSJ lettet [View all]
Canadians for whom the future of the West, liberal democracy and the rules-based international order are important should consider leaning in to President Trumps obsession with making Canada the 51st U.S. state. Its population is roughly equal to Californias, and, given the countrys political center of gravity, it would probably be a solid blue state. Adding another one the size of California would put both the presidency and the House in the hands of the Democrats for decades to come.
Moreover, since no U.S. state is a federal entity like Canada, itd seem more sensible to have each province be admitted as a separate state, with two senators apiece. That would give the Democrats a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate and make their influence in the Electoral College even larger.
A U.S. enriched by Canadas temperate, sensible citizenry would be a more reliable leader of the free world. Perhaps, on reflection, Canadians would decide that lowering the maple-leaf flag is a price worth paying. More likely, Mr. Trumps supporters would persuade him to think again.
