(77,159 posts)with Rubin at that time. His writing block was from being too close emotionally. Jacques knew what type of lyrics Dylan was looking for. There is a live version of the song with Levy's original lyrics that lawyers insisted needed to be changed, which were for the LP version. The lawyers were correct, and were aware the Patterson powers-that-be would encourage a couple people to sue.
Patty Valentine did sue, because the song made her "sad." Poor thing! Put away the bottle and tell the truth, and you might cheer up. She was the daughter of a close friend of the lead investigator on the case, and told whatever lie Vince fed to her. By the time the Caruso file was finally accessed, we knew she had lied about everything she said on the stand. More, one of the first officers on the scene told me that she was a pathological liar. Really just a pathetic liar.
The lawyers were concerned Bradley would sue. Levy did make a small mistake in one lyric mentioning him. It's worth noting that after telling the truth in '74, he would no longer lie for the police and prosecutor. He paid for that. He was firm in saying that he never saw Rubin or John Artis. And that the lead detective had called the gunmen "Muslim assassins" early on. Rubin was not Muslim, and certainly not in the Nation of Islam.
Over the years, Bello swore to a total of 14 different versions of what happened that night.
It's interesting that Malcolm was murdered by two men, wearing suits, one with a shotgun, the other with a pistol. The crime Rubin and John were convicted by two men wearing suits, one with a shotgun, the other a pistol. The man who confessed on his deathbed to being the one Rubin was accused of being was in the NOI. I could go one and on!
