So pride doesnt really enter into the equation for me.
Besides the criteria is something different for everyone
proud to be American because you lost a relative in WW2? youre an immigrant success story ? you feel strongly on the foundational stuff like the constitution? the breakaway from monarchy?
It could just as easily be hyper-partisan fluidity, when youre proud when your sides in power and less so when the other side is.
Pretty moot, in my opinion.

I remember feeling like I had to do that traveling in Europe after the Vietnam war.

I don't get "proud". I feel fortunate. But I am often embarrassed. This is one of those times.
