(15,734 posts)Dylan's been disappointing people his whole life, people who wanted him to be or say or do something he wasn't about to, and he kept saying he wasnt who people wanted him to be. Say this, say that, be this, be that, dont say that, dont do that, and he's like, i dont know you and i aint workin on your farm.
That's why we're still talking about him, pro and con, because he's still him, after all these years, and still saying he just writes songs and sings them and make of it whatever thy wilt...
It's pretty ironic that you keep referring to him as an icon when all he's ever said his whole life is he's nobody's icon, nobody's savior, spokesperson, leader, prophet or nothin like that at all. If there's one famous influential person in the world who consistently said fuck your expectations, all i do is one thing, it's all i know, write songs and sing them about wherever i'm at and whatever i see and feel--it's him.
Yeah, i know, all you want him to do is bla bla bla... If he ever did what you want, it wouldnt make no difference, even for you, you'd be happy for 15 minutes, if that, and then you'd forget it, or just want more from him. Imagine what it's like to be that poor fucker. .
He's like a windmill doing whatever a windmill does with the wind, and youre Don Quixote complaining that the dragon aint breathing fire like it's damn well supposed to. And the folkies still whinin when he went lectric, the atheists still whinin he went Christian, the Christians whinin when he went wherever he went next, and so on. Get in line, join the club.
Whatever you need from him, you might try and get it someplace else. Maybe inside yourself somewhere.
Still, my friend, i would never stand between a man and his lance and his dragon, so i'll say again, have fun. You may be obsessed with some elusive figure in a slippery dream, but you seem to be enjoying yourself pretty much, not really in that much serious pain at all. So yeah, carry on, do your thing, like Bob's a-doin his.
And with that, adios to this very loose thread.
