(15,595 posts)But, since I was born in the USA, raised, educated there, and still have most of my family living there - even after living in Europe for nearly 31 years now - I still never deny that I am a US citizen.
I worked for my country as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the 1960s, when liberalism was in full flower. I also worked for my country with the US State Department when that was still a proud and functional agency. In between, I also worked for my country as a public school teacher for several years.
Through all those experiences, I was able to end my professional career working with international agencies in Geneva, where I was but one among many nationalities from around the world. I learned firsthand how we are ALL MUCH MORE ALIKE than we are different
I will NEVER change my mind about that, no matter what national label is affixed on anyone.
While I am completely ashamed by what the political environment in the USA has become and, as a result, wish never to live there again full-time, I will not deny an essential part of my being simply because some of the worst people in the world are currently running the show.
Besides, I still want the country of my birth to become a place where my children and grandchildren - along with all others - can live up to their potential.
